What to Expect
Your child’s first session will last approximately 45-55 minutes long. I use an integrated approach; however, in the beginning sessions, our child therapist use Child Centered Play therapy which helps your child to feel safe, accepted and empowered. Limits are only set as needed. As your child begins to trust and feel accepted, we will integrate other directive approaches based on your child’s needs.
The initial appointment is typically last 1-1.5 hours and it is preferable we meet without your child present to allow for free and open communication. It is important your child is able to begin their therapy experience on a positive note. The first part of the assessment consists of review of the policies and procedures, information about the process of therapy and myself. The second part will consist of you providing information related to what is going on with your child, family history etc. and establishing and initial treatment plan goal. There will be about 10-15 minutes for any remaining questions. During this initial assessment I may provide other questionnaires for you to complete to help with the assessment. It’s important that you bring any assessment’s that may have already been completed to this appointment i.e. psychological’s, etc.
It’s important for you to understand therapy is a process and often times changes are not seen for at least 6-8 weeks. The first several sessions are spent building a safe and trusting relationship with you and your child.
Please know that you are always welcome to reach out and ask questions when you have them. It’s important we meet at least every 3 months if not sooner to discuss the progress of your child.
